The Headed Hat-Trick Hero
With Newcastle United flying high in the Premier League ahead of tonight’s trip to Stoke, even the most pessimistic of fans might be tempted to think of Europe and of the Magpies returning to the heights enjoyed under Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby Robson.
In the latest ‘Classic’, Rich Pye remembers Newcastle’s first foray into Europe since the late 1970s, and a particularly unique performance by their future England midfielder, Robert Lee.

No Country for Old Sven
Sven axe offers a lesson for chairmen everywhere
by James Riches
In the opening paragraphs of my Championship preview for this very website back in August, I wrote the following sentence:
“Add into the mix two former England managers, and we could be set for one of the most exciting Championship seasons ever.”
Now, in my defence, that is so far not a lie. Yes, it’s not even November, and Sven-Göran Eriksson has joined the hapless wally extraordinaire Steve McLaren in exiting the division, but you can’t say their downfalls haven’t been entertaining in their own sad, grimly imminent way.

Why I don’t hate Manchester City
Saudi petro dollars, ridiculous wages, prima donna players, multiple managers sacked before having the opportunity to succeed, Garry Cook, Carlos Tevez, Gareth Barry, buying success, the nouveau riche: There are many plausible reasons to despise the Premier League’s new leaders. The problem is I just can’t quite bring myself to do so.

Player power flexes its muscles again as City back money over Mancini
Adopting a staggeringly supportive stance of manager Roberto Mancini, Manchester City have today charged Carlos Tevez with, wait for it, refusing to warm up. Ooooooh, that’s gonna sting. He’s really going to regret telling his boss to do one during one of the biggest games in City’s history. Rumour has it that the board will punish Tevez severely following the outcome of the inquiry, with 20 laps around the training ground reportedly having been mooted. Tevez and his agent will surely appeal any such draconian measures.

The plank or the sword, ye scurvy dog?
Into the brine you’ll go, as we all sing yo-ho-ho-ho,
over a barrel we have ya, so if ye don’t walk we’ll stab ya.
We’ll take all of your best and your brightest, and the fees we shall pay are the tightest,
for looting and pillaging’s our creed, it’s the ethos of Premier League greed”.
